About
Florida law requires all motor vehicles to be registered
within ten days of the owner becoming employed, placing children in public
school, or establishing residency in Florida. A registration is the evidence
of paying the registration tax on a motor vehicle and includes a metal license
plate, serial number validation decal and registration certificate.
Registration must be renewed annually during the owner’s birth month. Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), Division of Motor Vehicles
(DMV) is the agency that oversees vehicle registrations in Florida. The
DMV works with the counties to issue tags and titles and
ensure that vehicles throughout the state are in compliance with registration
codes. The DMV also collects fees under the International Registration Plan, the
International Fuel Tax Agreement, and the Fuel Use Tax Program, which all ensure
that motor carriers pay for their usage of roadways and fuel.
The DHSMV produces
annual revenue reports to the Florida Legislature. In this report, the number of
registrations and total revenue from the DMV are
documented. The most recent Revenue Report is available on the web at http://www.flhsmv.gov/.
This indicator shows the annual percent change in registered vehicles in Florida. Due to a change in the source of the data in 2008 the annual percent change is 0.
