About

Florida law requires drivers to be licensed before operating motor vehicles. The Division of Driver Licenses, under the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, is responsible for all activities related to licensing drivers. Different classes of licenses are required to operate both commercial and non-commercial motor vehicles, including motorcycles. To be issued a license, an individual must pass hearing and vision tests, be able to identify road signs and traffic laws in a written exam, and demonstrate sufficient driving ability. These tests are offered at the 143 driver license offices throughout the state. The Bureau of Field Operations oversees these offices. Another bureau within the Division of Driver Licenses, the Bureau of Records, is responsible for screening, verifying and updating driver records. In addition the bureau provides the public with record information, fulfills court actions and conducts administrative research. The Bureau of Customer Services helps customers understand Florida’s motor vehicle laws and requirements. To receive additional information, one can submit a public request work order to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The data can be provided in either print or tape form.

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles produces annual revenue reports to the legislature. In this document, the number of licensing transactions and total revenue from this division are recorded. The Revenue Report for the most current fiscal year is available on the web at http://www.flhsmv.gov/. Quarterly reports are also available at this website.
